Importance of Sawan Somwar

The auspicious Sawan (Shravan) month is very dear to Lord Shiva. Sawan starts on the first day of the Shraavan Krishna Paksha.

This year, Saawan will continue for 58 days. This phenomenon is occurring after 19 years. The month of Saawan this year coincides with the Adhik Maas or Mal Maas.

Some Shiva devotees organize Maha Rudra-Abhishek Yagya/Puja in the Shivaratri of Sawan to appease Lord Shiva.

According to legends, After the Samundra Manthan (Ocean) Churning, Lord Shiva swallowed the poison ‘Halahal’ to save the world. This poison produces heat inside the body. To reduce the effect of the poison, the Devtas started pouring water on Lord Shiva.

The whole month of Shravan is devoted to Lord Shiva & Shakti (Maa Parvati). But Mondays are specially devoted to Lord Shiva and Tuesdays are devoted to Goddess Parvati. Shravan is the month when divine energies are all around us. If you worship Lord Mahadeva and invoke divine energies during the month of Shravan, you get the blessings and grace of Mahadeva.

Shravan is also related to the monsoon season in India. Along with it, it is a special season for married and unmarried women. Many devotees, especially women start the ‘Solah Somwar’ fast from the first Sawan Somwar.

Many worshipers of Lord Shiva, embark on a special pilgrimage (Kanwar Yatra). In Kanwar Yatra, devotees (Kanwars) collect water from holy rivers and carry pots (Kanwars) on their shoulders for offering to Shivling.

Sawan Shivratri and Hariyali Amavasya are the auspicious days that falls in the Sawan month.

How to Observe Fast During Shravan Month?

The Shravan fast rules are not hard & fast. Just keep them with devotion and faith. Below are the rituals to be followed during Shravan fasting:-

  • Get up early in the morning (in Brahm Muhurat).
  • Take a bath and wear light-colored clothes, if possible white color.
  • Go to the Shiva temple, offer Bail (Bilva) leaves, flowers, and other articles to Shivling, and pour water mixed with some milk on the Shivling.
  • Light a Diya and show Dhupbatti to Shivling.
  • Start meditating on the Shiv Panchakshar Mantra, Om, or other Shiva Mantras.
  • In the end, bow your head to Lord Shiv & Devi Shakti and seek their blessings.
  • On the day of fasting, consume only liquids like milk, tea, juice, or fruits the whole day and consume a simple vrat meal in night.
