Raksha Bandhan is a sweet festival celebrating
the bond and love between brother and sister. It is celebrated on the full moon
day of the Shravan month. This year, it falls on 11th August 2022
(Thursday). It is one of the most awaited festivals in India and on this
auspicious day, the sisters put Tilak on the forehead of their brothers and tie
Rakhi and pray for their well-being. On the other, the brother also takes a vow
to protect his sister from every evil force and circumstance.
History of Raksha Bandhan
There are many stories about the origin of
Rakshabandhan in the history of India that dates back hundreds of years ago.
Some of the popular stories are given below:-
The
story of Draupadi and Krishna
According to legends, once Lord Krishna
incidentally cut his finger. On seeing his bleeding fingers, Draupadi at once tore
a piece of her Saree and tied it around Lord Krishna’s finger to stop the
bleeding. This developed a bond of brother and sister between Draupadi and
Krishna. This is the reason that Lord Krishna came to Draupadi’s rescue at the
time she was being humiliated by the Kauravas and disrobed by Dushasana.
Rani
Karnavati and Emperor Humanyun
The significance of Rakshabandhan is
evident from the Mughal Era also. According to history, When Bahadur Shah, the
Sultan of Gujarat, invaded Chittor, the widowed Queen karnavati of Chittor was
helpless and as a gesture of getting protection, she sent a sacred thread
(Rakhi) to the Mughal Emperor Humayun. After this special gesture, the Emperor
immediately left with his troops to save her empire and finally defeated
Bahadur Shah to hand over the empire to Rani Karnavati’s son Vikramjeet Singh.
The
Story of Yama and the Yamuna
According to legends, once the river Yamuna
tied a Rakhi to Yam. Overwhelmed by this gesture, Yama, the Lord of Death, made
the Yamuna immortal and also announced that everyone who is tied Rakhi by his
sister will also attain immortality.
Roxana
and King Porus
There is another historical story to prove
the significance of Raksha Bandhan. When Alexander the Great invaded India, his
wife Roxana sent a sacred thread to Porus in lieu of protection of her husband
in the war. That act immediately made Porus decide to lose the battlefield to
Alexander the Great.
