Why Mahashivratri is Celebrated?
Mahashivratri is celebrated to honor Lord Shiva, one of the main deities in Hinduism. It is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati were married. Shiva and Parvati are both representations of adoration, strength, and unity. The narrative describes how Lord Shiva married Shakti, his celestial spouse, a second time. Mahashivratri represents marital love, passion, and unity. Shiva and Shakti are two manifestations of the same force, and they can only stand fully or be as powerful as one another. On Maha Shivaratri, married women pray for the well-being of their husbands, while unmarried women pray for a husband like Shiva, considered as the ideal husband.
According to another legend, the dance of primordial creation, preservation, and destruction, known as the Tandava Nritya, is said to have been performed by Shiva for the first time on Maha Shivaratri, according to folklore. Lord Shiva prevented the end of the world by performing this act of devotion. So, the festival is also seen as a celebration of Lord Shiva's victory over evil forces and ignorance. These are the reasons why we celebrate Mahashivratri.
