Why do we celebrate Navratri?

Navratri has a different meaning in different religions. But the purpose of celebrating it is common, I.e. the victory of good over evil.
According to legends, the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura pleased Lord Brahma with years of strict penance.  When Brahma asked for his wish,  he asked for immortality I.e., he must not be get killed by a man or animal.  However, Brahma told him that only a woman can kill him. But Mahishasura believed in his immortality and he attacked the earth, heaven and hell.
Seeing such devastation, the gods decided to approach Lord Vishnu for help. After considering, Lord Vishnu decided to create a female form to defeat Mahishasura. To give birth to Durga, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva merged their respective forces. Durga, with her inborn power and weapons killed Mahishasura after a long battle. The day Goddess Durga killed the wicked demon Mahishasura is celebrated as Vijayadasami. This day is also celebrated as a victory of Good over Evil.

During Navratri, idols of Goddess Durga are installed in homes and temples. Maa Durga is adorned with beautiful flowers, clothes, and jewelry.
