Shubh Navratri 2022 ! Significance of Navratri Day 2 (Dwitiya Tithi) - Dedicated to Goddess Brahmacharini

Goddess Brahmacharini:

The second day of Navratri is dedicated to the divine mother Brahmacharini. She is the extended form of Goddess Shailputri and is the daughter of Daksha Prajapati. She is in her purest and unmarried form as Sati. As in the form of Brahmacharini, she is worshipped in the unmarried form. This is the reason why she is called ‘Brahmacharini’.

Appearance:

Adorned in simple white clothes, Goddess Brahmacharini is depicted as walking on her bare feet and she carries Jap Mala (rosary) in her right hand and Kamandalu (a water pot) in her left hand.

Story:

When goddess Brahmacharini got to know about her past life as the wife of Lord Shiva, she took a vow to achieve him as her husband in this life again. So, She did severe penance (Tapasya) for 1000 years to get Lord Shiva as her husband. It is another reason that she is called ‘Brahmacharini’. She performed a strict penance and lived only on a diet of flowers and fruits. For the next 100 years, she survived only on leafy vegetables (Bilva leaves). Later she even stopped eating them and this is the reason she is known as ‘Aparna’ (without leaves) and lived without any food and water. She faced the harshness of the weather with all her heart while being in penance. Nothing troubled her in her way to achieving Lord Shankar as her husband. It was only her love and devotion for Lord Shiva that she went on the extreme ‘Tapa’, severe austerity, and strict asceticism.

Significance:

Her devotees worship her to get her blessings for peace, virtue, and prosperity. She blesses her followers with wisdom and happiness. Women of marriageable age worship her to get her blessings to get married soon. Students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, IIT, IIM, etc. worship her to get success in their exams.
