Why is Janmashtami Celebrated on 2 Days?
In Hinduism, two types of religions I.e. Smarta Sampradaya and the Vaishnava Sampradaya celebrate Janmashtami. The Vaishnava Sampradaya mainly relates to the ISKCON tradition. The ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), mainly consists of Vaishnavism followers and they celebrate Janmashtami on the second day I.e. Ashtami tithi. The majority of the population who is not aware of the Smarta and the Vaishnava tradition follows the ISKCON dates.
But, one should follow only the dates defined in Hindu religious texts like Dharmshindhu and Nirnaysindhu.
Krishna Janmashtami Story
According to legends, the evil king Kansa ruled Mathura. He wanted to extend his empire. This is the reason he married his sister Devaki to Vasudeva (the Yadu king). Kansa showered the newlyweds with lavish gifts to gain the trust of Vasudeva. But, suddenly, a voice came from heaven that his evil deeds would end when he will be killed by Devaki’s eighth child.
After this prophecy, Kansa locked the couple in prison. He tried to kill Devaki but Vasudeva spared her on the promise that he would give his 8th child to Kansa. Kansa agreed and he killed all six children. The seventh child was miraculously transferred from Devaki’s womb to Rohini, the first wife of Vasudeva and in this way, the seventh child was safe. Then came the time of the eighth child. He was none other than Lord Krishna (an avatar of Lord Vishnu).
When Devaki was in labour pain, Lord Vishnu informed Vasudeva about Lord Krishna and how he will kill Kansa. Lord Vishnu destroyed all the locks and put all the guards to sleep.
Vasudeva did as he was guided and left for Gokul taking Kanha Ji in a basket. He crossed the Yamuna with divine blessings and exchanged the newborn baby girl of Nanda (the head of Gokul) with Lord Krishna.
Later, when Lord Krishna grew up, he killed Kansa.

Janmashtami Celebrations Across India
In Mathura and Vrindavan, the birthplace of Lord Krishna (Krishna Janmbhoomi) and the place where he spent his childhood respectively, it is celebrated by playing dance and dramatic scenes portraying Lord Krishna. From his butter-stealing act to Ras Leela with Gopis, many vibrant plays are held. Bhajans and devotional songs are sung in praise of Lord Krishna. Devotees keep fast until midnight. Lord Krishna is bathed with Panchamrit and water (made with milk, yogurt, Ghee, honey, and sugar). Prasad is offered to Krishna Ji and is then distributed to the members of the household. The main delighting event is that of ‘Dahi Handi’. Pots of mild are hung from tall poles in the streets, and boys form a pyramid structure by standing on each other's shoulders. After that, a boy reaches the topmost level and breaks the pot. This event represents Bal Krishna’s childhood when he stole the curds hung on top by his mother and this event is more popular in Maharashtra.
Apart from the Mathura and Vrindavan, Dwarka (Gujarat), Odisha, Goa, Kerala & other states witness a huge celebration with lots of decoration and other things.
